| Coast Guard closes portions of Upper Mississippi and Missouri rivers | |

ST. LOUIS - The Coast Guard Captain of the Port Upper Mississippi River closed portions of the Mississippi and Missouri rivers Monday, Sept. 15, 2008 to recreational vessel traffic within the following areas:
St. Louis Harbor mile marker 179.0 to 184.0 on the Upper Mississippi River. Clarksville, Mo., mile marker 273.4 to 301.1 on the Upper Mississippi River. From Waverly, Mo. to the mouth of the Missouri River mile marker 0 to 300. The closures were implemented to ensure the safety of small craft due to flooding on the Mississippi and Missouri Rivers. Strong currents and heavy debris present a great safety hazard to vessels. River closures due to high water are determined by thresholds contained in the Waterways Action Plan. This plan was developed as a joint effort between the Coast Guard, its industry partners and the Army Corps of Engineers.
The Mississippi and the Missouri rivers currently remain open to commercial traffic with certain restrictions. Commercial vessels are advised to proceed at the slowest safe operating speed based upon prevailing conditions in order to minimize wake damage. All mariners are encouraged to ensure that moored vessels and barges are adequately secured. ### Saving Lives and Guarding the Coast Since 1790.
